Bolton (1) 1 Tottenham (0) 1

Tottenham were out-played for long periods but hit the crossbar twice and missed a second-half penalty as their exhilarating FA Cup fifth-round tie at Bolton finished 1-1.

Wanderers were the superior side for an hour and opened the scoring in the 34th minute when a flowing 16-pass move started by goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen culminated in Kevin Davies scoring from 12 yards.

But Jermain Defoe's clinical finish in the 61st minute put his side on level terms before Tom Huddlestone failed from the spot, sending the match to a replay as a result.

Bolton, who created four decent openings in the opening quarter of an hour, should have had a comfortable cushion before they allowed Spurs back into the game.

Johan Elmander's ninth-minute shot was deflected over by Vedran Corluka after Chung-Yong Lee's cross came back off Matt Taylor, Zat Knight volleyed straight at goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes and Elmander's threatening run into the left of the area was halted only by Huddlestone's well-timed tackle.

However, the Swede was more culpable when he was sent clear by Ricardo Gardner's 15th-minute through-ball as his first touch took him wide and his second saw him blaze wildly over with his left foot. Taylor was next to threaten with a low curling 30-yard free-kick which Gomes did well to turn around the post.

Bolton's pressure eventually told in the 34th minute with a flowing move for which Owen Coyle's sides have earned a reputation. Gardner's threaded pass picked out Elmander's diagonal run ten yards outside the penalty area and he exchanged passes with Lee before crossing from the byline to Davies who took one touch and stabbed home.

Defoe's sole contribution of the first half was to get booked, along with Taylor, for his part in an argument with the Bolton midfielder late on.

Davies almost scored his second two minutes after the break when Lee's cross was laid off by Elmander and the Wanderers captain's shot was deflected just wide of the post by Michael Dawson with Gomes completely wrong-footed.

The one-way traffic continued with Elmander firing into the side-netting after combining with Fabrice Muamba and Davies to find space on the right of the penalty area.

Muamba should have done better in the 54th minute when a quick counter-attack saw Paul Robinson dispossess Peter Crouch in the Wanderers penalty area and release Davies who in turn sent Elmander racing down the left but when the cross came in the England Under-21 international screwed his shot wide.

Tottenham had two chances to equalise within the space of the next 120 seconds but were denied twice by the woodwork.

Firstly Crouch beat Jaaskelainen to head against the crossbar and then Wilson Palacios' driving run and cross saw Robinson deflect the ball up and on to the top of the frame of the goal.

Spurs eventually made the breakthrough in the 61st minute when Gareth Bale cut into the area and picked out Defoe on the penalty spot who took a touch before firing high into the net.

Six minutes later substitute Niko Kranjcar, on for the ineffective Modric, lashed in a 25-yard shot which Jaaskelainen had to tip around the post at full stretch.

With 19 minutes remaining Spurs were handed the chance to score a second when Crouch's attempt to lift the ball over Sam Ricketts saw it hit the defender's arm. However, Huddlestone's effort from the spot was poor and Jaaskelainen saved to his right.

The goalkeeper was called into action again moments later to turn Defoe's shot around the post. After such inactivity earlier in the game it was Spurs who finished the stronger but Bolton held out to earn a trip to White Hart Lane.

Bolton manager Owen Coyle felt his side should have put their FA Cup fifth-round tie at home to Tottenham beyond doubt a long time before they allowed their opponents to grab an equaliser.

"It was a fantastic cup tie with numerous opportunities,' said Coyle. "Harry said to me at full-time he thought it was a game of two halves but I think it was a game of an hour for us with the last half-hour going to Tottenham.

"There is a lot to be pleased about. For large periods of the game we were in the ascendancy. If we had come in at half-time with a bigger lead no-one would have thought it was unjust. The players will tell you I had a blast at them at full-time because I believe we should have done enough earlier on to have won the game.

"While accepting at 1-1, with Jussi making the penalty save, we still carried a threat going forward. Probably none of us wanted a replay but we are in the draw for the next round and whose to say we can't go there and win the replay. I would hope any team I am ever in charge of you would see they would want to win every game they play in and they showed that today.'

Coyle also revealed he hoped there would be better news on centre-back Gary Cahill, currently sidelined after suffering a blood clot in his arm, in the next fortnight.

"We don't want to get ahead of ourselves but the clot has dissolved and we'll revisit it in two weeks with a scan with a top specialist in that field,' said the Scot. "Having done that we will see what the picture is from there but there should be some news in two weeks and hopefully it will be of the better variety.'

Tottenham assistant manager Joe Jordan also felt Spurs did enough in the final half-hour to have already booked their place in the quarter-final.

"The second half put us in a position where I think we should have won the game,' he said. "We lived dangerously in the first half as we didn't play particularly well and the performance was not good enough. But in the second half we got ourselves sorted out and we should be going away with the victory, no question of that.

"We certainly didn't play in the first half and in the first 30 minutes Bolton's style of play caused us problems and it could have resulted in a second goal and we couldn't have had any complaints. It wasn't until the second half we dominated the game.'
